Orienteering has been an integral part of Midleton CBS since 1982 when Liam O’Brien, former Olympian and retired teacher first introduced it to the school. Since then our students have achieved great success individually and as a team, with many students representing school, club and country at international events.
Orienteering is a competitive sport combining running with navigation. It is a timed race in which the individual participants use a specially created, highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse terrain and visit control points in sequence.
Every year first year students participate in an introductory event in Ballyannon or Curragh woods with students further developing their skills during PE classes. Students are encouraged to attend local events at weekends and midweek during the summer. Our three school teams compete in the Cork League, Cork Championships, Munster Championships and All-Ireland Championships.
We often take the school mini-bus to the weekend/midweek events as well as the provisional and Irish Championships. Occasionally we organise orienteering school tours to large international events including the JK International Festival of Orienteering, Scottish 6 Day and Lakes 5 Day in the UK.
