AIMS OF SUBJECT: 

  • To give students a strong foundation for Leaving Certificate German.
  • To have a basic cultural and linguistic appreciation for German and gain an interest in German speaking world.
  • To expand on topics dealt with in year 2 and complete the curriculum for Junior Certificate.
  • Students will recognise basic verbs, vocabulary and sentence structure.
  • Students will be able to read, write, speak and listen to a range of topics

RATIONALE FOR SUBJECT:
Students will:

  • Understand and use German in a variety of common social situations.
  • Give basic information about themselves and ask the same of others.
  • Express likes and dislikes on variety of topics e.g. hobbies, food, film etc.
  • Find information in various types of literature e.g. menus, advertisements, articles etc.
  • Write a short letter and postcard informally.
  • Listen and extract specific information from video/dvd/cd.

ASSESSMENT:
For Higher Level & Ordinary Level:
Listening Comprehension: 140 marks
Reading Comprehension: 100 marks
Written Expression: 80 marks
Exam duration: 2.5 hours
