Welcome to the Gaelic Games Page
Midleton CBS has been very much to the fore of the promotion and participation of Gaelic Games, with a particular emphasis on Hurling. The school participates in competition organised by Munster and Cork colleges throught the school year, also taking part in the RICE CUP competition for U-14 Hurling which is run by the Christian Brothers.
1988 was the yr in which we made the breakthrough when winning the legendary "Harty Cup" for Munster Senior Colleges 'A' hurling. Luckily, similiar titles occured in '95 and '06 but an All-Ireland title has still eluded us. We await !

Corn Daithí DeBarra - Fe-14 Cork Colleges 'A' Hurling
This year the competition has taken a different format to previous years, given the increased number of teams participating at 'A' level in the competition - which can only be good news for hurling in the county. Now teams are divided into 2 groups with the top two teams in each group playing off in the semi-final stage.

Welcome to Golf at Midleton CBS
Midleton CBS has been taking part in Cork & Munster Golf competition since the early 1980’s The Cork Colleges U-18 is contested for the Phil O’Sullivan Trophy since the inception of the competition in 1981. The competition is divided among 4 regions, namely, East Cork, North Cork, West Cork and Cork City. Originally, the 4 regional winners played semi-finals and finals at The Cork Golf Club, under a match-play basis. This has always proved a very popular competition, being played off handicaps (max 18). Midleton CBS were runners-up in 2 finals in the late eighties and early nineties run under this format. The format has changed over the past ten years and nowadays the 4 regional winner’s play-off in a stableford competition, hosted by Monkstown G.C. with the competition being followed by Dinner and Presentation. Under this format, success has come the way of Midleton CBS, with the following team members:

National Competitions start off each year with the South Munster, followed by the Munster and then the All-Ireland competition. Midleton CBS qualified for the All-Ireland in 1990 and again in ’91, represented on both occasions by: Mark Forde, Sean McSweeney and Jason Law. At the time, these competitions were sponsored by The Golf Foundation and a European dimension was added to allow for the national victors compete in such noted courses as St. Andrew’s, Gleneagles and Sunningdale. Unfortunately, Midleton CBS had to settle for bronze in each of their National Final appearences, nonetheless, it is a source of pride to be rated as the 3rd best School in Ireland. |
||
Success at Munster level followed in 2006 with a team represented by Robt White, Michael O’Neill, David Conolly and Ross Williams. Bronze medals were our lot again this time, but a tremendous effort was given by the team. Recessionary times at the moment, has resulted in the cancellation of the European Competition. Each year, in early September, a schools competition is organised, thanks in the main due to the generosity of East Cork G.C. for the use of their facilities. This competition keeps us up to date with the current form of our golfers and allows for the opportunity to unearth any new upcoming talent. |

Team ‘05 |
|
| In 2005, Gearoid Collins, Paul Crotty Steven Donovan, Joe Fitzgerald, Paul Ryan and Andrew Walsh were the first students to travel to India with Miss Smyth, Mr. Kiely and Fr. Michael Leamy to Calcutta and Asansol to work with the Christian Brothers and the Missionaries of Charity. While in India they spent time teaching children basic English and Maths, played with orphans and took them for walks, painted and decorated the playground at St. George’s School and lived in community with the Christian Brothers in India. |
Birthday Celebrations 2005 |
The ‘welcome’ party 2007 |
At the end of each day the team met to look at the events of the day and how each person was feeling. By the end of their eighteen day visit student and adult alike felt changed by their experiences. One student remarked on how happy all the children they met seemed to be, how they were not affected by the materialism of our world. Another felt this was a life changing experience and would change the way he looked at those on the margins of his own world back in Ireland. |

Precious moments 2007 |
Team 09 after Mass at Motherhouse, |
In February 2009 Mr. Niall Ahern and Miss Maura Smyth took the third team of students to India. Padraig Mulry, Kevin O’Brien, Simon O’Brien, John O’Halloran, Conor O’Keeffe, and Patrick O’Mahony left for India in February and spent eighteen days working with children in Calcutta and Asansol. They had spent almost a year preparing for their visit and when they arrived in India they immersed themselves in the projects. They found themselves working with some of the same children from previous visits and they too were very moved by the experience. |
Each year the group of students and teachers that travel to India also attend Mass at Motherhouse, the first convent set up by Mother Teresa. This celebration is also attended by the volunteers from around the world who have come to work for the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. During our time in Asansol we also spend a day at a Shanti Nagar Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre. Here we spend time with the orphans at the centre and visit with the patients who are in the care of the Missionaries of Charity. |
Work completed at Nai Disha Platform School for Street Childen |
The India Immersion Project has become an integral part of life at Midleton CBS. It has raised our awareness of the plight of those on the margins of society and given us the opportunity to reach out and make a difference as a community. |
