Midleton are pipped late in mudbath

IN THE worst conditions imaginable, Midleton CBS had their Harty Cup aspirations dashed in heartbreaking circumstances at Cahir yesterday.
Being brutally honest, this quarter-final tie should not have taken place but as they say, what’s good for the goose, is good for the gander.
The underfoot conditions were deplorable. It was simply a mud bath and there would not have been a dissenting voice if both teams had got another opportunity to exhibit their skills.
The sides were deadlocked right on the hour mark but it was the Tipperary team that secured a dramatic last-gasp point that carried the day and in the process ended Cork’s interest in the old competition for another year.
Brian Kennedy, their right-corner forward, was the hero for Our Lady’s  with the winning score in the 61st minute and he was one of the players on their team that caught the eye the most over the hour, ending the game with three points from play.
It would be way out of line to be critical of either side given the appalling state of the field that they were expected to perform on, but Our Lady’s  had more of a cutting edge in front of goal and their two goals were critical and defining moments as events transpired.
Their midfield partnership of Colin O’Riordan and John McGrath were always a factor, both putting in a considerable shift, most notably the Tipp dual All-Ireland medal winner O’Riordan.
Centre-back Joseph Nyland was assertive too in a defence that restricted the Midleton CBS forward unit to just two points from general play.

The Cork representatives were again all too reliant on midfielder Joe Millerick to notch scores from placed balls and, ultimately, that was their undoing.
However, their defensive unit worked their socks off throughout with James McCarthy leading by example at number six.
The Tipp team got off to a dream start and were 1-2 to 0-1 to the good inside seven minutes, the goal arriving from the stick of McGrath from a 65 that deceived the Midleton keeper Steven Beausang.
However, Midleton responded  positively to that setback and five points on the trot from Millerick and Billy Dunne had them ahead by a point after 18 minutes.
But it was a short-lived advantage and they were back in the ascendency with a fabulously struck goal from wing-forward Tommy Nolan, whose first-time shot from 35 yards was unstoppable and gave the Midleton keeper no chance.

The same player pointed shortly afterwards and the Tipperary side went to the dressing rooms three points in the clear, 2-3 to 0-6. Kennedy embellished their advantage with another point when the teams resumed but, amazingly, that was their last score until he notched the winning point right at the death.
Millerick, with three more pointed frees, and Niall Motherway, brought Midleton CBS right back into the game and after 43 minutes it was deadlocked, 2-4 to 0-10.
With the conditions worsening, there was no more scoring for the best part of 20 minutes and in that time Midleton CBS had a couple of half decent chances to take control on the board.
It must be said too though that McGrath’s normally impeccable free-taking for Our Lady’s Templemore wasn’t what it might have been, and during the hour he missed a couple of advantageously placed opportunities.
With the draw looking more and more likely, Midleton CBS were unlucky when a Jake O’Donoghue effort went off the post and out wide.
It was frenetic stuff now, both sides giving everything as they went in search of the golden score that would split them.
And it was Templemore who drew the winning ticket when Kennedy, the JK Bracken’s club player, dissected the posts with what proved to be the decisive score from 45 metres out.
That was that, it ended in absolute heartbreak for Midleton CBS on a day when the game was just a lottery.
