Wednesday 30 Nov 2011 Corn na Bandann - Fé-15 Peil - Final
Midleton CBS (2-9) vs Abbey CBS, Tipperary (1-8)
Ballyhea, Co. Cork, 13:30PM
Midleton C.B.S. triumphed in the final of the Corn na Banndan U/15 B final in a wet and windy Ballyhae Co. Cork. The opposition being Abbey CBS from Tipperary Town provided the latest challenge to a talented Midleton team. In the two previous rounds Midleton took the scalps of two Kerry teams (intermediate School Killorglin and Tarbert Comprehensive School) who as well provided tough opposition. Both games against Kerry opposition provided a stern test for Midleton, with the boys in red and white having to come from behind to overcome the opposition.
Midleton began the game playing into a strong wind with rain falling sporadically through the sixty minutes. The opening quarter turned into a battle of attrition with both teams evenly matched. The wind initially worked in Abbey’s favour with two points in quick succession. From that point the Midleton back line began to settle. Individual battles began to ensue, the toughest in particular was for wing back and Captain Brendan McCarthy who did Trojan work defensively and in attack keeping one of Abbey’s best players at bay. The other half backs Seanadh Smyth and Daniel Harrington broke an amount of ball and provided the platform for some crucial attacking positions. The full back line of Michael Mellerick, Jack Enright and Mark Healy had the beating of their men but some speculative decisions including a penalty went against them in the first half. The man between the posts Colin O’ Reilly was flawless with intelligent kick outs and reassured handling throughout.
The midfield partnership of Ian Cahill and Cillian Broderick worked hard with both Players Winning crucial possession and played some excellent passes into the full forward line which resulted in multiple scores. The half forward line of John Looney, Cormac Beausang and Cian O’ Driscoll worked tirelessly and intercepted several outgoing Abbey Passes from Defence to attack and crucially linked well with the full forward line with some intricate passing and movement. The full forward line of Jack Farmer, Billy Dunne and Declan Kelly were in superb form, linking well with the half forwards and tirelessly working to win incoming ball and crucially converting possession into scores. This in the end proved the difference between the two teams.
The critical moment in the first half for both teams was the scoring of goals. Midleton’s first attack ended with a goal from Billy Dunne which created a confidence boost early on for Midleton and for Abbey CBS they’re goal resulted from a penalty that was harshly awarded at the end of the first half which was converted clinically.
At half time Midleton were down by two points, a position that was not too unfamiliar from previous outings. The second half began with Billy Dunne and Jack Farmer springing immediately from the traps. A goal from farmer and a series of points from Dunne drove Midleton into a quick lead and with the wind Midleton were cruising. The fifty/fifty battles were in Midleton’s favour however Abbey always looked dangerous with two goal opportunities spurned by Healy and Broderick. The introduction of Daniel Landers was once again inspirational for the Midleton team with his hard running, precise passing and tireless defending and attacking proving too much for many of the Abbey players. The deficit was brought back to two points by Abbey at the end of the third quarter but clinical finishing and tireless work in the final quarter by Midleton saw them finish on top by four points and take the cup back to Midleton emulating the successes from 2009.
