Green-Schools Irish Water Awards 2018 Winners Announced
Congratulations to our four 5th Year students who came runners up in the region in their climate ambassador program, promoting marine waste and water conservation. Ross Cahill, Calvin Buckley, James McCarthy and Cathal Morrissey.
Tapping into students’ creativity as schools awarded for water-themed actions.
The Westin Hotel, Thursday, May 3rd: The work of students and staff from schools nationwide were recognised at the Green-Schools Water Awards for their work on the Water theme of the Green-Schools programme. These particular schools were selected due to their extensive efforts in involving the local community in their work along with innovative ideas to conserve water. The Green-Schools programme is coordinated by An Taisce’s Environmental Education Unit and is proudly supported and sponsored by Irish Water.
Speaking at the awards was Green-Schools Manager Cathy Baxter: “This is our favourite time of year in Green-Schools. It’s fantastic to be in a position to acknowledge and reward the efforts of the students, teachers, principals, parents and caretakers who have committed so much of their time to this initiative. The creativity and enthusiasm of all involved is inspiring.”
Speaking at the awards Eamon Gallen, General Manager at Irish Water said “We are delighted to sponsor the Green-Schools awards and I want to congratulate all the students, teachers and parents for their hard work in achieving an award today. This is the sixth year that Irish Water has sponsored the Green-Schools Water theme and since the beginning 2,316 schools have been awarded the Green Flag for Water. It really is a credit to everyone that so many students are involved in this fantastic programme. In one year alone schools saved 360 million litres of water which is enough water to supply a town the size of Longford for an entire year or make nearly 3 billion cups of tea!
“The provision of clean drinking water and the disposal of wastewater in a manner that protects the environment is vital to our daily lives, and for economic and social development, which is why the Green-Schools programme is critical for educating and informing our future generations about the importance of water conservation and water source protection. In Irish Water we are working hard to fix our really old water and wastewater networks to improve treatment processes to protect the health of generations to come and the environment we live in” added Eamon Gallen.
